One of the things I’m most often asked for by friends, family and readers is to recommend a pure, safe deodorant that works. Unfortunately, I’ve come up empty-handed, having to tell them that I’m at as much of a loss as they are, and that I sadly can’t send them off with a suggestion, because I myself have spent months trying, testing, hoping and being very disappointed with the natural deodorants I’ve tried.
Well, that was then and this is now, and I’m thrilled to say I’ve found a deodorant that is not only natural and safe, and not only one that works well for a natural product, but one that actually BEATS THE HELL OUT OF ANY DEODORANT I’ve tried IN MY LIFE. I’m not kidding.
When Kristin from Greenbody reached out to me and offered me one of her deodorants (which come in an impressive array of natural scents, from Rosemary Peppermint to Wintergreen Pine, Sage & Citrus to Ylang Ylang & Jasmine, and more), I was intrigued, but admittedly sceptical. I was at something of a crossroads in my deodorant search. For some reason, since I had my baby nearly three years ago, my sweat level has gone way up. But in keeping with my desire to use clean, green products, I knew the mainstream deodorant I was using had to go, especially since deodorant is placed on the underarms, which is right on those lymph nodes.
This is important because your skin absorbs roughly 64 percent of what you put on it, and when you’re dealing with toxic, and sometimes carcinogenic chemicals like aluminum, parabens, synthetic fragrances and even dyes, you’re taking a huge risk. Where do you think these chemicals go? I hate to tell you, but the answer is straight to your breast tissue. Scary stuff.
But what’s a girl to do? If I had to choose between body odour and clean deodorant, well, I just didn’t know what I was going to do. I was determined, but continued to come up short. Frustrated, I tried at least ten natural deodorants before Greenbody. From crystals to sticks to creams, it was always the same story: They worked for a short time (like an hour or two), and then the effects were gone. I was beginning to think that all natural deodorants were created equal.
They’re not. When I first received my package and popped the lid off, I had a “hmmm” moment, because half of the product was in the lid and the other half had crumbled. However, there was a sticker right on the product explaining what to do if it had melted, and though I didn’t consider this to be a melt, I followed the instructions to microwave it for half a minute, stick it in the freezer for half an hour, and let it thaw out at room temperature. This totally fixed the problem, turning my Wintergreen & Pine deodorant into a solid form once again. I know that shipping can be rough on products like this, so I chalk the case of the crumbles up to that, and I’m perfectly fine with it because it was an easy fix.
So, here comes the moment of truth. Half-heartedly, and expecting major disappointment, I applied the deodorant and waited. And waited. And waited for odour that just never came. The texture is a solid, but unlike others I’ve tried, it’s moisturizing instead of chalky or dry, and it’s not at all greasy or sticky. The light Wintergreen & Pine scent wasn’t as noticeable as I had thought it would be, and once the deodorant had been on for a few hours, the scent was virtually gone. But that didn’t matter, because in its place was NO SCENT AT ALL. Nothing. Nada. Zero. Zip. Zilch. You feel me here?
I thought I must have been convincing myself that this stuff worked, simply because I needed it to so badly. Then I went to work out. For an hour. With lots and lots of sweat. And guess what? No odour. I’m talking NONE. I was honestly so shocked and elated that I nearly cried right there on the treadmill.
The ultimate test: I let my husband try it. This was the “pinch me, I must be dreaming” effect I was looking for. I needed him to confirm what I still thought I must be creating in my head. He applied the deodorant at 7 a.m., and by 4 p.m., he had emailed me this:
“Steph- Report as requested on the deodorant. Holy S*%t, I can’t smell anything other than a nice gentle deodorant smell! This stuff is bloody awesome!’.
This is one of the most important reviews I’ve ever written, and I’ll tell you why. Deodorant, for the reasons I noted earlier, is something most of us use, and a lot of us don’t pay attention to the ingredients. Believe me, I understand the frustration when you’ve decided to go natural and are flustered because you just can’t seem to find a natural deodorant that truly, honestly works. You think you have to choose between smelling and chemicals. You don’t. I promise, if you try this deodorant, you will see exactly what I’m talking about. Because if it can work for me, a busy work-from-home Mom to a high energy toddler, who also works out a ton, AND for my husband, an active architect, I’m so confident it will work for you.
The Wintergreen & Pine scent I tried is something I would say is more masculine. I like a little more scent and something a little more feminine so I’m going to be purchasing the Rosemary and Mint very soon.
Kristin at Greenbody has generously offered a code to my readers. Use the code SOECO10 at checkout for ten percent off. I have not been paid for this review. I did receive the product for free, but you’d better believe I haven’t written word one about the ten+ other deodorants I’ve tried in the past couple of months.
This one is a game-changer.
